EMDR Therapy

What is EMDR?

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic treatment involving the use of structured, empirically approved, specific techniques designed to assist the person treated in the alleviation of the residual effects of a trauma or multiple trauma experiences- whether experienced recently, or at a very early age.

By the use of visual, auditory, or tactile back forth consistent rhythmic movement and stimuli, the EMDR therapist can help the person, (by using EMDR techniques) facilitate desensitization of right brained emotional memories with the help of left brain factual synthesis, whereby the disturbing memory, is accessed, its painful energy is felt, and the memory may eventually come to a place where the memory has little to no activating effect on the person’s current experience. This is not hypnotherapy, as the person receiving the EMDR treatment is consciously aware of what is going on, and has the ability to stop the session with a hand signal if needed.

This modality of treatment can be experienced as a miracle to many people. Those who suffer from lifelong unresolved trauma, employment experiences exposing them to war or life -threatening experiences, can benefit greatly from this modality of treatment. Children or adult child victims of abuse of any type can find relief in the desensitization and reprocessing of traumatic memories that may be intruding and creating daily suffering in their lives.

As a clinician, I am EMDIRA trained and certified in Basic EMDR Therapy.

Since this past year, I have treated many clients utilizing EMDR therapy. I have been told on several occasions by my clients that this treatment has made a significant, positive impact on the quality of their lives. One client stated that the terror and nightmares surrounding the memory were squeezed out like lemon juice from a lemon. The specific memory she had, indeed was no longer sour and intrusive. This is the anticipated end result of EMDR therapy as it treats individual memories. There is much more to learn about EMDR.

I am happy to speak with you in more detail about EMDR, my training and professional experiences using this modality of mental health treatment, and to address your specific situation and how EMDR might help you.
